Short-term objective
01 - Plant Hope: Share gardens, seeds, plants, and growing experiences that bring comfort, beauty, and joy to children and families.
Founded in love · Rooted in hope
Our Mission: The Jelani Washington Seeds of Hope Foundation honors Jelani’s life and legacy by planting hope for children and families affected by serious illness, particularly pediatric cancer and the realities of loss. We uphold this mission to serve others through five core objectives.
Together, we transform the ways Jelani lived and loved into purposeful action.

The building in this graphic is a visual representation of the Jelani Washington Seeds of Hope (JWSH) Foundation mission. The name and rooftop reflect the focal point to which we will always return: remembering Jelani. We are because he was and still is so central to our lives.
The JWSH Foundation’s work is divided into the five core objectives depicted as pillars in the overview graphic: (1) Plant Hope, (2) Empower Youth, (3) Raise Awareness of RMC and other rare, extremely deadly pediatric cancers, (4) Support Families, and (5) Build Legacy. Each pillar reflects Jelani’s life, passions, values, and interests. Together, they transform the ways he lived and loved into purposeful action for children, families, and communities.
The final pillar, Build Legacy, encompasses fertility preservation, but its meaning extends far beyond that important concern. It also honors the importance of family—a value that was integral to who Jelani was. In videos recorded during his illness, he repeatedly spoke about how deeply he loved his family and how much he worried about us. He was not afraid of dying; he was afraid that his family would not be okay or protected without him. Even at only 15 years old, he already felt a manly level of responsibility, and he carried that with remarkable sincerity, grace, and honor.
It is our greatest hope that through the foundation, the very essence of who Jelani was will continue to be felt — gently, powerfully, and for years to come. Even in his short time here, he touched the world with a depth of care, curiosity, courage, and kindness that far exceeded his years. We envision the foundation growing and maturing in ways he never got the chance to, carrying forward the bright, gentle energy his spirit projected. Through its work — and through the stories that will inevitably be shared — we hope the world will still get to know Jelani a bit and feel a trace of the abundant love and joy he brought to us. We hope this work will help us keep part of him close always.
